Reviewer: A viewer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire United Kingdom
This film is based on Paul Erdman's novel "The Silver Bears." Like Mr. Erdman's books, this film is rivetting from start to finish. Not unlike James Bond movies of the 1970s in some respects (exotic locations - in this case Lugano, Switzerland and the Persian Gulf, high finance, sex, corruption etc. etc.). If you have an interest in finance, commodities, or simply a good honest to goodness story with interesting and colourul characters etc. then you will enjoy this film. I for one watch it again and again. Although there is some satire in the movie, and many of the characters are used for humorous purposes, I would not describe this as a comedy movie. First and foremost it is a thriller about corruption, greed and the interplays between a man who works for a criminal organisation and his attempts to break away into a 'legitimate' business of his own. On the way, he is made to question the nature of friendship, love, and more besides. Charles Gray gives an excellent performance (as always). There is a lot of humour and comedy-esque moments - but not more than in a typical James Bond movie of the period. So not a comedy in my opinion - a light hearted romp with comic moments and a thriller theme would perhaps be a better description.

But what ever you call it, one thing it certainly is: First class entertainment. Something for everyone! Buy it. You will watch it again and again! One of my personal favourite movies of all time, and I'm sure it will become one of yours too......

Trillion Dollar Bet 2000.

Reviewer: gregory r zieren from clarksville, tn United States
In 1998 the largest ever financial collapse, the failure of Long Term Capital Management, risked pulling the world economy down with it until the Federal Reserve Board intervened and saved the day. Trillion Dollar Bet is the story of that rescue and the Nobel Prize-winning economists whose theories of hedge funds and risk management made LTCM possible. The film traces the evolution of theories of tracking the stock market by following minute variations in prices over time and the purported ability of the stock trackers to predict movement in the markets. Such a theory, if accurate, would permit investors to profit from such fluctuations at practically no risk, an exciting possibility. And for LTCM in its first years in the 1990s, the theory seemed to yield astonishing results, until the collapse of the Russian ruble in the summer of 1998 threw a monkey wrench into the works and threated the stability of stock markets around the world. This is an exciting story for those with an interest in investing and a modicum of economics background. The target audience is certainly the well informed and interested general public and not specialists. Difficult concepts are explained with crystal clarity and common sense examples. Members of the failed firm and the Nobel laureates contribute their views on the short term success and long term failure. I found myself riveted by explanations offered and the possibilities of "money for nothing." This may be the best Nova episode I have ever seen, and for an audience interested in stock markets, economics, finance and investing the film will stimulate your mind, entertain you, and make you smile at the arrogance of those who thought they had it all figured out.

Warren Buffett - Oracle of Omaha

2000.  Description  Every May, thousands of clamoring followers make a yearly pilgrimage to Omaha, Nebraska. They come from all 50 states and 12 countries eager to ogle, touch or, perhaps, even speak with a 70 year old financial legend, billionaire Warren Buffett.

In an era where technology stocks have catapulted people to the status of overnight millionaires and sent them crashing back down again, Buffett has eschewed the fast-paced IT stock action. Many shareholders deserted the sinking ship of Buffett’s company, convinced that his investment genius had reached its heyday. Warren Buffett, who has beaten the S&P 500 almost every year for three decades, was suddenly seen as an investment dinosaur. But as the IT bubble burst, he has once again re-emerged as a pre-eminent financial genius who stuck by his long-term investment philosophy.

His company’s annual meeting in Omaha is a tribute to his philosophy… sort of. His hordes of fans long to know the secret to his success but find it difficult to attain his level of patience with an investment decision. While Buffett deliberately sidesteps the trappings that are often associated with wealth, it's difficult to tell if his fans are more interested in him or the status that he symbolizes. No one has made heroes of financial tycoons quite like the people who zealously follow the Oracle of Omaha.

"Oracle of Omaha" is a 60-minute documentary shot on High Definition. The film features interviews with Peter Lynch, biographer Roger Lowenstein, The Motley Fools, Warren Buffett’s children and Buffett himself. The film was directed by Lisa D. Gildehaus and is a Riveting Pictures production.

Money magazine, December 2000 review: "Oracle" deftly weaves together shareholder high-jinks with insights on Buffett by... Peter Lynch, the Motley Fools... and Buffett's kids.

The Wheeler Dealers

1963.  Henry Tyroone comes to New York from Texas with a lot of oil money to play with in the stock market. He meets stock analyst Molly Thatcher and the two fall in love.

Since accidentally catching this film several years ago on cable, I have counted this as one of my favorite films. It is dated by its 60's chauvinism but sports some of the snappiest dialog and humour since George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart wrote. My favorite movie quote of all time comes from this film. I hope you give this a viewing. I promise if you like subtle and not so subtle dialog driven satire, this is a film for you.
