Other People's Money
Very entertaining, and the best "for" and "against" scene regarding the
desirability of hostile takeovers we have seen. We use it in our finance
courses
to stimulate discussion on M&A, takeovers, and takeover defenses. 1991. A corporate
raider threatens a hostile take-over of a "mom and pop" company. The patriarch
(Gregory Peck) of the company enlists the help of his wife's daughter, who is a lawyer, to try
and protect the company. The raider (Danny DiVito) is enamored of her, and enjoys the thrust
and parry of legal maneuvering as he tries to win her heart.
Take the lessee contract IQ test--go ahead! We have been involved in
many leasing disputes over the years on both sides of the table. We have
learned one thing over many years about equipment leasing: the written
contract is the deal! If you don't get it right, you will have an uphill
challenge if things become contentious. Protect your firm by assertively
negotiating your lease contracts. Learn best practices. Learn what
provisions are immovable objects and which are flexible. Take the test
to see where your knowledge level falls!

This movie will take your
breath away. Huge financial success followed by disaster.
In 1998 the largest ever financial collapse, the failure
of Long Term Capital Management, risked pulling the world economy down with it
until the Federal Reserve Board intervened and saved the day. Trillion Dollar
Bet is the story of that rescue and the Nobel Prize-winning economists whose
theories of hedge funds and risk management made LTCM possible. The film traces
the evolution of theories of tracking the stock market by following minute
variations in prices over time and the purported ability of the stock trackers
to predict movement in the markets. Such a theory, if accurate, would permit
investors to profit from such fluctuations at practically no risk, an exciting
possibility. And for LTCM in its first years in the 1990s, the theory seemed to
yield astonishing results, until the collapse of the Russian ruble in the summer
of 1998 threw a monkey wrench into the works and threatened the stability of
stock markets around the world.
